For too long, educational and workforce systems have operated independently, creating gaps between what students learn, how they are evaluated, and what is ultimately required for success in STEM careers.
As a result, too many capable learners are excluded from opportunities not because they lack potential, but because they encounter systems that were never intentionally designed to help them develop expertise.
Build by Design brings together educators, students, parents, and industry leaders to examine how expertise is developed and how access to that expertise can be expanded.
Participants will explore how gatekeeping practices appear across the learning continuum and identify practical strategies for replacing those barriers with systems that promote learning, growth, innovation, and long-term success.
The goal is simple:
Move from accidental outcomes to intentional design.
Because expertise is not reserved for a select few. It is built through the systems, opportunities, feedback, and support structures we create.
Gatekeeping Systems: Why Talent Is Lost Before It Can Develop : This session explores how gatekeeping systems emerge in schools, homes, and workplaces and how these systems often prevent learners and employees from developing the expertise they are capable of achieving.
Across education and industry, we often assume that success is the result of talent. Yet when we look more closely, many of our systems are measuring access rather than potential. Students are sorted into opportunities based on prior preparation. Grades often reflect compliance, behavior, or circumstances outside of learning. Academic language remains invisible and untaught. Parents are expected to navigate complex systems without clear guidance. Industry struggles to find qualified talent while overlooking opportunities to help shape and develop future talent pipelines.
The result is predictable: Potential exists everywhere. Opportunity does not.
Participants will identify barriers within their own contexts and begin examining what must change if we are serious about expanding access to STEM expertise.
Building Expertise Through Intentional Design: This session introduces the mindset shifts required to move from gatekeeping to expertise-building and provides a framework participants will use throughout the summit.
If expertise is built rather than born, then our responsibility shifts. The question is no longer: “Who is capable?” The question becomes: “How do we design environments where capability can grow?” Building expertise requires more than access. It requires intentional systems that:
• Teach the skills behind the content
• Make expectations visible
• Provide meaningful feedback
• Create opportunities for productive struggle
• Support reflection and growth
• Develop confidence through competence
Whether in classrooms, homes, or workplaces, expertise develops when people are given the tools, support, and opportunities necessary to learn.
